Tracking

Tracking utilises a dog’s natural ability to follow a scent trail left behind by a person or animal. Dogs work in partnership with their handler, following a scent trail across different terrains, environments, and weather conditions. It’s a collaborative process that relies on communication, trust, and careful handling.

Most tracking dogs are seen in dog sports or voluntary roles, but you may also have come across operational tracking dogs working in real-world settings, such as: police tracking dogs locating fugitives, pack hounds used in drag or trail hunting, Working Trials, IGP/IPO trials, Mantrailing and lost dog tracking.

At Puppy Plus, we are affiliated with Scent and Track UK. Emma is a Scent and Track accredited instructor, and Katie is completing her Scent and Track Instructors course in 2026. As part of the Scent and Track UK family we are pleased to offer their TrackStars Scheme.

TrackStars™ is aimed at dogs and handlers looking for a fun and rewarding activity they can enjoy together. Teams learn how to follow specifically laid scent tracks and find lost items (articles) on the route.

TrackStars™ is a non-competitive progressive scheme aiming to promote teamwork between dog and handler, and encourage people to have fun whilst earning titles and awards with their dog. As such, the levels are designed to develop skills and build confidence as a team with each advancement. All teams have the opportunity to earn certificates and collect achievement awards through workshops, regular training groups, and assessment sessions.

As part of her training both Emma and her chocolate Labrador Doris have achieved their TrackStars 1-3 awards, which include;

TS1: 3x tracks of 250m
TS2: 3x tracks of 500m
TS3: 2x tracks of 700m, 1x double blind track of 350m

Puppy Plus, we plan to start offering TrackStars introductory sessions a few times a year, and progression sessions in between.

We have access to several venues including Middle Park Adventure Camp, Glansevern Gardens as well as several private grounds that will be great for tracking. We also have access to public areas like Hafren Forest, Gregynog Hall also.
